The Power of Vulnerability
Oct 17, 2024The Power of Vulnerability: Why Asking for Help is Essential
Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, but I believe it’s one of the most powerful tools we have. In fact, vulnerability is contagious. When you open up about your struggles, it often encourages others to do the same, creating an environment of trust and mutual support.
Let me share a personal story that highlights this. I have a seizure disorder, and there was one particularly challenging moment at Dublin airport. It was around 6 a.m., and I was supposed to fly to Birmingham for an important customer meeting. Unfortunately, I had a seizure right there in the airport. To say it was embarrassing is an understatement—imagine hitting your head on the concrete floor in front of strangers. It was a pretty awful experience.
In that moment, I had to do something I wasn’t used to—I had to ask for help. I couldn’t attend the meeting, and I needed someone to step in for me. Of course, the person I asked was more than happy to help. This simple act of vulnerability, admitting I couldn’t do it alone, led to the realisation that people are generally willing to lend a hand when you need it.
For me, it took a long time to get comfortable with asking for help. I used to think it made me look weak or incapable, especially in a professional setting where we’re all trying to maintain a certain image. But the truth is, we’re all human first. Even if we hold positions like SVP of Sales or other high-level roles, sometimes our bodies—or our minds—just say “no.” And that’s okay.
The more I’ve embraced vulnerability, the more I’ve seen that it has a ripple effect. When you open up about your struggles, you give others permission to do the same. None of us are bulletproof, and by acknowledging that, we create spaces where people feel safe to be themselves, flaws and all.
So if life is feeling overwhelming or hard, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s not a sign of weakness, but of strength. After all, vulnerability is contagious, and it can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections with those around you.
It really is okay to ask for help. Human first, Leader second.
